She Knows Best - Lifestyle Tips for Guys

Ask her to dance

by Arieanna on May 9th, 2006

Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or married, here is one piece of advice that all guys should know:

“Ask her to dance”

Really. If it’s someone you think is cute whom you may not know well, or if it’s your lovely wife, asking is a courtesy that doesn’t go unnoticed.

I know a lot of guys are nervous about asking a girl to dance. Or, if married, they take it for granted that they will be dancing. But it’s nice to be asked, really it is.

I’m not talking going clubbing and trying to get some. I’m talking about being out to dinner, or being at someone’s wedding, or another occasion where dancing may come in the more formal sort.

My suggestions:

  • Ask her to dance with good eye contact and a hand outstretched
  • Do not be nervous or make excuses about your dancing skills. Most of the time, she won’t notice.
  • Ask near the start of a song, so you get the full time to dance
  • Don’t forget to lead. It’s so much more organized, even if you feel uncomfortable doing it.
  • If you feel that placing your hand in hers, and one on her hip, is too formal, you can relax into a more comfortable posture of both hands on her hips. She’ll usually cue to change her dance posture.
  • Don’t stand in one spot - move around the floor
  • Smile and don’t sweat!

As a now married woman, I would be incredibly happy if my husband asked me to dance. When married especially, we tend to be victims of assumption. That we don’t need to be asked to go on a date, or asked to dance. But, at least from my perspective, I believe it is a small and sweet gesture to show you are still actively seeking her interest by asking. :)
