I will admit I’m not the biggest fan of board shorts. They make me think of too many stereotypes. However, they can look good if dressed up, not down. And if you don’t put on airs. OMG it drives me nuts when guys get all spiffy in shorts and a tiny wife beater tank and strut around the beach (I live in Kits which has a beach very similar to those in Europe - lots of small bikinis and muscle-bound guys).

Anywho, if you want a pair of shorts that are not khaki or green, as so many are, these are a nice option (from Quicksilver):
