Converse shoes
Jon emailed me for my opinion of Converse shoes, after he saw this picture:
Now, rightly, Jon noticed it’s not usually a good thing to wear runners with a suit, nor black pants and brown shoes at that (and, ick, tapered pant legs). Some guy celebrities try to pull it off as rebels, and usually get away with it, but I still shake my head at it.
Well, here is what I think. Some converse shoes are ok. Some are hideous. It gives me many 80s flash back moments to see them come back in style, but they have. The ones you choose depend on your style.
All Star® Trainer- Navy/Parchment Low, Unisex, Suede $55.00
Star Player EV Est. 1977 - Chocolate/Parchment Low, Unisex, Suede $45.00
Premiere One Star® - Olive/Yellow Low, Unisex, Suede $50.00
Premiere One Star® - Brown/Yellow Low, Unisex, Suede $45.00
You get the point, I think, of the styles to go with. Either something slick and bold, in solid colors, or with just a ping of a highlight. Low lying and flat. If you are one of the guys who has to have white, go for these: Targa Limited Edition - Ghurka/Off White Low, Unisex, Suede/Mesh
What to avoid with Converse (IMHO): raised heels or white within the heel, too much white (don’t you realize it gets dirty right away?), neon colors (I couldn’t believe they were on the site), hitops (do I really need to explain?)
Here’s another one that I just love, because even though it has a wacky punch of color, you just know it’s going to be amazing with jeans and khakis:
Penguin Men’s Peng Prince ($64.99) in Green Canvas/Suede
Hope that’s some good shoe guidance!

Even better from Converse — you can design your own shoes! Go to their website: http://www.converse.com, and check it out.
You get to choose from among several different options: high or low top, inside and outside shoe color, color of tongue, color inside of the show, striping, and you can even choose to have your name put on them. They have the basic colors, a few fashion colors, and even some fun prints (zebra stripe, leopard).
It’s no secret that I love shoes — and at $65/pair, I bought two custom pair. I’ve gotten lots of comments and compliments, and I LOVE ‘EM!

You can probably get away with it as a girl, but it’s not something I’d recommend. Most of the time it looks tacky.

Yes, I suppose being a girl makes it easier to pull off the converse custom look. Of course, I’m wearing them with jeans, NOT a suit.
I think another piece of it is that it may be more of an east coast fashion statement that a west coast one. Wandering around the west village a few weeks ago, they could be spotted on many a foot. But then wandering in San Francisco yielded not one sighting.

I grew up wearing Chuck Taylor’s from Converse.
Do any of you even know who Chuck Taylor was ?
I do. I think. That was a long time ago.
Somw of these are kinda attractive, but only for wearing with jeans.
