She Knows Best - Lifestyle Tips for Guys

Fall shirt styles

by Arieanna on September 28th, 2005

I was browsing through some of the great sale items at the Gap, and rather than tell you what’s on sale, I decided to also show you some examples of what I think are great fall shirts. Oh, and they are all on sale right now. Not a single shirt is above $24.99 USD.

What I want to show you here is a set of guidelines - you are free to root out these exact shirts, or just try to find something with similar features, that may suit you better in cut or style.

gp296273-00viv01This shirt features an embroidered front - it’s not like the old ruffles of the past, but a gentle embroidery that you notice but isn’t overly in your face. This colour brown is really attractive - it reminds me of fall and has a nice warm tone to it.

Buying tip: Anything lighter in colour may look more like dog crap, and we don’t want that, do we? Look for the white buttons - it may seem odd, but it really does stop you from being too monotone.

When to wear: I’d pair this with jeans. Don’t wear it with brown pants, as this is too much brown. It might be possible to pull this off with black pants, but be cautious. Consider wearing this as a layered look - dark blue tshirt, this, jeans jacket.

gp308418-01viv02Ok, this is a fabulous colour and a fabulous stripe. The colour is a nice raspberry or cranberry shade, which of course really mimics the fall shades of leaves coming down. If you walk into a room with a shirt like this, you’ll have all eyes on you.

This shirt also comes in brown with blue tones - of the two, the raspberry is more daring and attractive.

Buying tip: The stripes are of varied widths and shades, from dark to near white, which is very important in a striped shirt. It adds a lot of dimension. When buying stripes, look for this. Also, look for vertical stripes, which make you look taller and slimmer, not horizontal stripes - those just make you look fat.

When to wear: Great to wear as a business shirt, with black pants, or casually with jeans or khakis.

gp300738-02viv01This striped shirt has all the same striped features that you should look for: varying widths, shade variation, stripe direction. This one, however, has a more regular stripe pattern, slightly thinner stripes, and has more of a cream undertone to it. The green is nice, but also a slightly darker and more rich green would be good.

This shirt also comes in orange and brown, both of which are also nice. The orange is a great fall colour.

Buying tip: look for greens that have warmth in the tones, nothing dark like a forest green.

When to wear: this one would be great with brown pants or khakis, and also jeans with a brown belt. It can be worn with black pants in a business style, but I think it’s best suited as a casual shirt.

Hi Arieanna! Speaking of shirts, could you please mention the ‘please don’t wear a tie with a short-sleeved shirt’ thing? I see guys doing this all over and it makes me cringe!

Also, I recently read that Caucasian men should not wear white dress shirts, as it washes them out. What’s your opinion? Thanks! :)

    Great comments, thanks!

And I will give some thought to the dress shirt thing. I think it depends on the shade of your complexion, the season, and the type of shirt overall.
