Getting the right jeans for you

by Arieanna on September 27th, 2005

Jeans - ever wonder when it went from one style of jean to hundreds? Overwhelmed? You should be. There are so many jean types out there right now that it’s so easy to get the wrong type for your body. A pair of jeans that fits your body will stay in style longer than any jean fad will ever last.

Visit this jeans guide for some tips.

Yes, this guide only covers 6 jean types. These are the main ones, and the ones that are more classical and flattering than all others.

At all times, avoid the tapered leg! A tapered leg will put all focus on your calf and foot, narrowing your body shape in a weird and not flattering way. Some straight legs are ok, but in general I would recommend the boot cut. Note the length with a boot cut - you don’t want it to trail on the ground and get all scruffy.

When in doubt - buy your jeans too long and get them professionally hemmed. Always wash the jeans before hemming so that they shrink to their actual length.

I now buy all my jeans at Bootlegger. They offer free hemming, and the selection is fantastic…

That said, I was hoping for something more indepth here, primarily because all the differents kinds of cuts still confuse me (even after taking a look at the guide!).

Can you maybe cover different cuts specifically in individual posts, showing what works best for different body types (this is me as a guy asking, not as a b5 guy, so don’t feel any pressure here)?

Yep, will do. I also have purchased jeans in the past at Bootlegger. I also like Bluenote.

this blog is definitely a hard one to start. There’s so much to cover. Jeans is a HUGE topic, for example, and we have everything from cut to colour to designs and pocket placements and… you get the point.

So, you can expect me to have lots of content to cover for a long time ;) I think I’ll start on Jeans colour soon.

I’m loving it so far (and learning lots), so take your time, but hurry up too ;-) (I kid, I kid!)

I should note that I do generally buy a boot cut. But that’s because the lady at the store told me I’d look gay in anything else…

Actually, you’ll notice that your legs get skinnier from the thighs all the way down to the ankles. Slightly tapered jeans accentuate the natural shape of your body and look great on people with normal sized thighs.
