Layering with Colour
American Idol’s Ace Young has inspired this post. I’m not a big Idol watcher, but I did catch some of yesterday’s show and was inspired by one of the singers. Not by voice, although he was good, but by his fashion.
Now, this guy has it going on. And he knows it. The hair. Oh my. Probably lots of jealous guys out there. Also has an amazing set of eyes. But I go off track, what I want to mention is his combo of a bright shirt in his layering.

This guy knows how to layer. I am so into what he’s done in the top picture. Rather than using a base grey, white or black, he’s gone for a punch of orange. Orange is a big color this season again, and you’ll see it in both solids and in combination such as in his graphic tee. He’s pulled together the look by having a more neutral tshirt on top that ties in the color (although even without the orange it would have still looked hot). Brown is the new neutral - and is great on many skin tones.
One thing he’s done is paired the look with a great chunky brown belt with an antiqued belt buckle. Makes it look very casual - especially on low riser jeans and a slight tuck at the front. I’m still not sure I like that he has a bracelet outside his shirt sleeve, but I do love the brown & black leather bracelet on its own.
As you can tell from his profile, layering is Ace’s thing and I’m glad to see he has fun with different colors and prints.
Watch out this season for more of this look.
Layering tip: use colors in a muted palette. This does not mean avoiding bold colors like orange, but rather looking for the hues that are more pastel and muted. For example, the one on the left below is bright and harsh, while the one on the right is darker (not a requirement) and more muted:

Then, layer on top with a great graphic tshirt that has the same warm muted feel.
