Managing unmanageable hair

by Arieanna on October 31st, 2005

Erin asks: I need help training my hair in the mornings, I’ve tried hair wax, soap, wetting it with water and still it doesn’t do what its supposed to!

From what I’ve read, I think I can suggest a few things:

1. Get your hair layered if it’s really thick. This will thin it out a bit and make it easier to manage. The layers tend to work well to create texture and volume, and make it super easy for products to grip hair and do their work.

2. If the wax doesn’t work, use a mousse of some sort. When used on dry hair, it will help shape, mold and hold your hair with a natural look.

Typically, a wax will have a stronger hold than a mousse, so you should be seeing some results. What could be the problem is the amount of wax you are using and how you are using it.

- More wax is more hold, but too much can make it look dirty.

- Using it on dry hair gives you greater control.

- Apply a small amount evenly to palms and work into damp or dry hair.

- Ask your hair stylist (or barber) to show you how to use it. And get them to watch you do it to see if you’ve got it down.

I am 46. I am balding, with partial dandruff, alopecia (receeding hair line), dry scalp, split ends, and lifeless hair. Please advise.
    Thanks
