She Knows Best - Lifestyle Tips for Guys

My tux of choice

by Arieanna on June 9th, 2006

Ianiv & Arieanna Schweber

The wedding pictures have arrived! So, now I can officially show you a picture of the tuxedo Ianiv wore for our wedding.

The tuxedo is a previous rental purchased from Classy. The tuxedo is in the classic smoking-jacket style, with no notches and a very simple cut. It made all of the guys look taller. It’s definitely not your standard tuxedo anymore - you look at the Oscars and you’ll maybe see one guy in this jacket style, but boy will he stand out (Will Smith wore it once). I believe it may be on the return to fashion now as it’s cropping up more in celeb photos.

Anyway, the pants we chose were tuxedo style, with the stripe, but plainfront (no pleats). I think pleats make most guys look like they are wearing diapers.

Ianiv and the two groomsmen wore the same tuxedo jacket, the only difference being that Ianiv wore a tuxedo shirt, versus a classic dress shirt, and Ianiv wore a white vest & tie while the groomsmen wore black. We purchased the black vests early on, but finding the white was very hard, as it was a discontinued colour. In the end, I was only able to find it at a tuxedo rental place in Ontario, and had my mother bring it to Vancouver on extended loan.

The groomsmen wore white freesia and Ianiv wore orchids, which matched the orchids in my hair. Again, he also had a white pocket square, to contrast with the pink orchids, while the groomsmen were reverse with a pink pocket square (very suave).

Funny story to do with Ianiv’s tux: it didn’t require any alterations for the length, as it was perfect when we bought it, but we did have it pressed for the wedding. When Ianiv went to put on the jacket, one arm was too long. The seam had fallen and they had pressed it out, so it was an inch or two longer than it should have been. He didn’t tell me, because he didn’t want to stress me out (although I had my ‘bridal kit’ of supplies to help such as safety pins, he forgot), so he spent all day hiking it up to look shorter. So, always try on your jacket after cleaning!

Unfortunately, you got the collar wrong, as most in the US and Canada do because they don’t know the proper formality of the “wing” collar.

Proper wing collars should be the detachable kind, that go with tunic shirts that in this day and age can only be found in the UK. The “attachable” ones are horrific looking and floppy. Also, the wings should flair out slightly and have a less squared off look that what he is wearing. That style was worn by servants, along with the tie or bow tie. If you wear a wing collar, (and not a servant) it’s only done right by wearing an ascot. There are a few different names out there for them. Grafton/windsor, and they have to have height on the neck of 2″.

To see what I mean, watch Gosford Park.
