She Knows Best - Lifestyle Tips for Guys

Shorts with Business Shoes

by Arieanna on September 20th, 2005

Shorts are a summer item, yes? Not something you wear to most offices. So, we can consider them a “casual” item of clothing. I think that’s appropriate. Now, when wearing casual items of clothing, it’s considered in good style to also wear casual foot wear.

However, some guys out there disobey this rule. I often see men wearing nice khaki shorts with bleach white socks, yanked high, and a black pair of loafers. Oh my.

So, here’s a fashion tip: match casual clothes with casual footwear, and ditto for business attire. Mix & Match is off limits.

So much is common sense - but so much is overlooked, so I get what you mean!

Hmmm. As a conservative dresser, I have always obeyed this rule. But you are apparently unaware that it has become quite the thing in the last few years for the top-notch fashionistas here in NYC to flout it. Expensive dress shoes without socks (or with very small socks that barely climb out of the shoe) are all the rage among the style-conscious.

It also has historical precedent. It is only in the last thirty years or so that sneakers became acceptable wear for adults off the tennis court or boat deck. Traditionally, shoes were worn with shorts, (Ever see any photos of British Empire troops in the tropics?) and the look seems to be making a come back among the metrosexuals of our era.

Also, loafers are casual footwear. (Even Gucci.) Anyone who says different is either a shoe salesman anxious for your cash or the victim of under breeding.
