The Whole Look: grey hoodie with blazer and great style

by Arieanna on February 13th, 2006

Last week we went to the Great Big Sea concert here in Vancouver. It was a great concert, but I actually spent a lot of time trying to capture the look of one of the artists, Sean McCann, so that I could find his outfit and share why it works.

Sean McCann made me eat my words bout the hoodie and blazer bit because he did wear the grey hoodie and it did look good. But, it worked only in context of a number of things and I’ll lay them out here.

Sean took something really really casual - a grey hoodie - and pulled it into an outfit that was funky but overall not casual. Why? Because the other items he chose to wear were at the peak of style - the right cut, the right color, and very well put together. That is why he was able to pull it off. Now, I’m going to attempt to put together his outfit here for everyone to see.

Meet Sean:

Hair

His hair is growing long, but it’s nice and messy. In concert, it was actually a fair bit longer than this, but still well groomed. That’s his first style plus - he pulls off long hair well by a great cut, and a style with volume and texture.

Tshirt

Sean wore many layers during the concert. The first layer was a long sleeved tshirt - the exact one pictured above. It’s a great crisp graphic in black and grey. The graphic, and the tie in with the grey, made the whole ensemble pop more - you weren’t just seeing a hoodie and a blazer, but also the shirt.

Hoodie

Sean wore a grey zip up hoodie (which is a step up). Simple, not much to it, but really you didn’t see much of it except a strip on each side and the hood.

Blazer

The blazer Sean wore was simple. It really was just a part of the look, but was not the main focus. You would expect it to be the focus, but it just cleaned up the look and made him feel put together.

Jeans

Sean had great jeans. They were the perfect fit for his body - they sat low on the hips, were dark in a great wash, bootcut, and long enough to gently fold up at the shoe.

Shoes

Ah, the shoe. I have to admit I spent way too much time during the concert trying to figure out if his shoes were "shoes" or "boots" and to find some distinguishing characteristic to help me find them online. I wasn’t overly lucky, but I did find something of a similar style.

I liked it in the context of out outfit because it was completely unexpected. Black blazer, black shoe, right? Well, he proved that a little pop of camel can really tie everything together. It showed that upscale comfort look embodied in the outfit, and the shoe itself was just so nice.

The boot is from Kenneth Cole (KM25912), the shoe by Hugo Boss (19107). Both are camel, low, with a rounded square toe. Both are in a suede type fabric, which really makes them pop against jeans. I really like the boot.

All of this put together makes a perfect outfit. I’m satisfied that I’ve represented it 90% of the way. Really, that last little bit comes down to you and your style - how you wear your clothes and your comfort.
