Top 5 Best Stores For Men In Seattle From GQ Magazine
With the help of GQ magazine, I’ll share with you guys the Best Men’s Stores in selected States all around America. From clothing stores, to lifestyle stores like art, books and what-nots. Let’s start with Seattle.
“We’re hee-haws—you know, friendly folk,” says owner Nicole Miller, who opened this stylish men’s store after struggling to find decent clothes for her husband in a town full of record stores and organic coffee. The space has a masculine, nautical vibe, with grooming products from Brave Soldier and cool kid accessories like Casio video-game watches and Surface to Air pendants displayed on rough-hewn wood planks and rusty anchor chains. Go there for flattering A.P.C. jeans, button-up sweaters by Orthodox, and chunky knit scarves from Wales that work well in drizzly weather.
Goods is something of an anomaly. It’s a legit skateboard shop with cred, but in early 2005 the four skateboarder/owners expanded their business into the shop next door. Now they dabble in high-end Prps and Tsubi denim, a slew of T-shirt brands, and sneakers you won’t find anywhere else in Seattle. You’re likely to see a dad shopping for jeans while his son tries on DC sneakers. But despite the expansion, the original skateboard shop remains intact. “We’re all skateboarders,” says co-owner Paul Williams. “We didn’t want to get away from that.”
This roomy shop with hardwood floors, exposed beams, and an endless supply of designer clothes makes good use of its size. “We tend to overbuy,” admits co-owner Cerise Lacock. T-shirts—along with denim and hoodies from Rogan, G-Star, and Loomstate—work with higher-end Martin Margiela pants, the occasional suit from Paris-bred Paul + Joe, and edgy gear like a $680 side-zip cardigan by McQ. If you feel confused by the continually updated merchandise, don’t worry: That’s kind of the point. “Brands get overexposed,” Lacock explains, “and we want to keep our stock special.”
KuhlMan — 2419 First Avenue, Seattle, WA; 206-441-1999
Scott Kuhlman is Seattle’s best-known tailor, but his popular Belltown shop isn’t Savile Row material. A former flophouse, his basement outpost houses an endless selection of Japanese denim, vintage fabrics, and leathers, from which Kuhlman will gladly cut ultraslim custom suits, coats, and narrow shirts. His calling card? “The perfect shirt collar,” says Kuhlman. “They hold their shape and come to a precise point.” The shop also features an assortment of menswear with meticulous sartorial flair from Filippa K, Kicking Mule Workshop, Merc, and J.Lindeberg.
Peter Miller : BOOKS
Longtime Seattle resident Peter Miller sees his high-ceilinged, light-filled store—a fixture on this spot for twenty years—as a monument to the artists and architects whose products he sells. Literally. “Some of the best in the Northwest have contributed to the design of it, the bookshelves and everything,” he says. “Like Rick Sundberg, who built the Frye Art Museum, and Peter Bohlin, who did the Apple Store in New York.” When you’re done admiring the place, look for graphic volumes on everything from cooking to industrial design, as well as specialty objects like Zaha Hadid vases, Tivoli radios, Stelton lamps, and Marimekko bags.
