Tshirt with tie

by Arieanna on February 21st, 2006

Srikanth asks if it’s ok to wear a tshirt with a tie. Just a casual thing, with the tie nice and loose.

Well, this reminds me of the conversation we had earlier here about dress shirt lengths and ties - whether you can wear short sleeves with a tie and if a long sleeved shirt pushed up was an ok alternative.

It’s a general rule not to wear short sleeved shirts of any sort with a tie. It looks unbalanced. However, the exception is the long sleeved dress shirt with the tie - since pushed up it still gives the formality necessary to pull off the combo.

So, we come to the t-shirt and tie question. I’d have to say no on the basis of two factors as above:

  1. The length balance is off. The short sleeves versus the longer tie looks off kilter.
  2. The mix of casual and formal is too harsh

Now, while we can mix a blazer and a casual shirt and still be ok as far as formal/informal wear goes, the tie is still in it’s own ‘formal and only formal’ category.

What do you think? Have you seen this combination look good?

It looks good on Avril Lavigne, but she’s a girl.
    This is Srikanth. Thanks.

My pleasure. And, yeah, girls can get away with so much! ;)

I’d have to strongly agree here. I can’t imagine this even working as a ‘too-cool-to-be-normal’ look. Now, a blazer and a t-shirt is obviously a different mixture of formal/casual and it has worked quite well for many…

Speaking of the rolling up of the sleeves, is there any real etiquette on what you can get away with?

I like to keep my long sleeves unbottoned at the cuff and I usually fold them up for short sleeves (about 3 or 4 cuff lengths worth, just about the elbow length) but I’ve also seen the casual looking one fold up, basically with the cuff folded back once and kind of fanned out.
