What to give a new girlfriend for Valentine’s?
I’ve been asked what is appropriate for a new girlfriend - a girlfriend in that stage of early dating (3 dates or more) who was previously a friend.
Well, indeed it gets complicated. My advice is to be simple.
- Get some flowers (avoid the red roses, go for something more neutral - other shades or flowers) as they are a good ‘friend’ and ‘girlfriend’ gift
- Add on something funky like a bag of gummy bears or a lollipop. Something more fun than sentimental.
- Don’t give a card. No spelling out of feelings at this stage.
- Go out if you want, but treat it like a normal date not a serious thing. Somewhere nice, but not over the top as if you’d been together a long time
Consider this early Valentine’s as an opportunity to have fun, rather than to be mushy. Give gifts you would give in any early relationship, Valentine’s or not. The impulse buys like the flowers work here. Go places you would go on a nice date - nice. Not the local pool hall or anything, but don’t go 4 star. Hopefully that makes sense.
Good luck! A good friend often makes a great girlfriend, but the transition can be awkward - you’re so used to the friend vibe that even giving a gift can be weird. So, take it slow, take small steps. Do things at your own pace.

What I do is just take her out for a good time - no gifts or flowers. I have never had a problem with that and you don’t have to worry about going “over the top”and freaking her out. I am speaking about L.A. girls (Southern California). These girls are a little “different”. I met my girlfriend at Dating-Game and we went out twice before the Big Day (V-Day). I took her on a romantic canoe ride, had fish and chips at the pier, then wine tasting, and wrapped it up with a really nice dinner. Got no complaints, trust me. Next year, she will get flowers too!!!
